Van Gogh--The Cottage
The Cottage, 1885
This old peasant's cottage, seen at dusk, gives a
peaceful, idyllic picture of rural life. Van Gogh was fascinated by such peasant
dwellings, which he called "human nests." This cottage, with its double front doors
and split chimhey, actually housed two families. One of them was the De Groots, who
posed for The Potato Eaters.
