Van Gogh--Farmhouses near Hoogeveen, 1883
Farmhouses near Hoogeveen, 1883

During his stay in Hoogeveen, in the province of Drenthe, Van Gogh went on long trips through the surrounding moors. There he painted this atmospheric study of farm cottages and outbuilding. The modest dwelling rises dark from the bare plain, set against the lighter evening sky. This effect would often recur in his later work.
